Bright Brown Vintage

I just finished printing some tote bags for my pal and brand new entrepreneur, Gin Murray.  She recently launched her new business, Bright Brown Vintage, and will be selling her wares at a pop-up shop for the month of December at 1801 Danforth Ave. in Toronto.  She is sharing the space with Toronto based art collective, VSVSVS.

Gin has also been busy converting a vintage trailer into a mobile shop, which she will be traveling around with in the near future.

If you are in the Toronto area this month you should definitely make your way to the east end and check out her shop before it's gone!

ART GIVES GOOD GIFTS - Group Show

I have a piece in an upcoming group show at the Renann Isaacs Gallery in Guelph.  It's an under $1000 show featuring over 60 artists including some of my pals: Pam Lobb, Sarah Walterhouse, Pearl Van Geest, Anna Kovler & Tammy Ratcliff. Should be a good one!

Post-it Show #8!

My Post-its for this year's show.

I'm happy to announce that I have been invited to take part in Post-it Show 8!  It is an annual art show put on by artist power couple Mark Todd and Esther Pearl Watson and this year will take place on December 8th at Giant Robot 2 in LA. The post-it's sell for $25 each and it's always a packed house on opening night.  Tons of great artists participate and I'm honored to have been invited back.

Here's a shot from one of the previous openings:

This year I'm sticking with collage, using brightly coloured, hand painted papers I have lying around from previous projects.  It's been great fun so far and a nice change of pace.

For anyone attending the event, read this little write-up about what to expect.

New Digs!

I recently began subletting a studio space in the Trafalgar Building, located in downtown Guelph.  The space belongs to painter Pearl Van Geest, who is currently in Windsor doing her MFA and I will be sharing it with my friend and fellow maker-of-cool-shit, Ryan Cassidy.  Right next to our space are printmakers Tammy Ratcliff and Lydia Nieuwenkamp and the rest of the third floor is also dedicated to artist studios.  You have no idea how thrilled I am to be able to work in a place like this!  Just take a look:

There's a large painting of the Queen fixed to the ceiling. The peeling paint makes her look like a burn victim.

CARDBOARD SKULL MOUNTAIN!

Earlier this summer I was commissioned to construct a 'mountain' using hundreds of cardboard triangles and hot glue.  It was then photographed by the talented Jaime Hogge for the cover of Gregory Pepper's new album, "Escape From Crystal Skull Mountain", available here August 21st.  It was quite an undertaking, especially for something that literally melted in the hot July sun during the photoshoot, but all in all a fun project!

Illustration for The Classical

Here's a small illustration I whipped up yesterday for my pal and woman of many talents, Jesse Ruddock (aka Koko Bonaparte), to accompany a piece she wrote for The Classical about her childhood encounter with future hockey bruiser, Todd Bertuzzi.  Read it here!
Commercial illustration is something I've always wanted to try, perhaps this will get the ball rolling!

Art On The Street - 2012

I will be participating in Art On the Street this Saturday July 14th in downtown Guelph.  My print, 'The Lurker', is featured on this year's poster! I'll be at booth #17 (the orange square on the map!) right next door to my printmaker pal, Lydia Nieuwenkamp!

Should be a fun day!

Poster Design

My pal Brad, the founder and organizer of all things Kazoo! here in Guelph, asked if I could design a poster for the upcoming Bruce Peninsula/Skeletones Four show.  I gladly accepted and decided to dig out my gouache and make a painting. The poster needed to be done just as Kazoo!'s five day festival was wrapping up, so I featured paraphernalia from the festival along with the official festival mascot, Kazoo! Kitty, exhausted from days of non-stop debauchery.

PS- I've heard good things about Bruce Peninsula, but I know for a fact that The Skeletones Four will rock your socks off, so come to the show if you're in town!

Creature From the Black Lagoon

This is a paper cutting I made for my co-worker and talented artist, Jay Stephens, for the annual Wyndham Art Supplies secret santa gift exchange.  I was lucky enough to receive a gift from Jay, pictured below, which has a hidden glow-in-the-dark secret message! So awesome!

Here is my post from last year's gift exchange.

Teal Tarp (unfinished) - acrylic on wood panel

Purple Tarp (unfinished?) - acrylic on wood panel

I've also been simultaneously working on a series of cmyk dot paintings based on video stills from my mom's 8mm home movies,  (you may remember this video I made a while back also using this footage). The dots are first painted on rice paper using FW inks and then the paper is fixed onto a round wood panel.  I've only finished two so far, but that's not bad considering each one takes approximately 10 hours to complete.  Hurray for OCD!
